Four other Woodsist Records bands that you should check out (videos)...

(photo via Woodsist.com)

Lots of folks are rightfully high-and-mighty on Real Estate's self-titled LP, released on Woodsist Records this week. I saw them open for Girls at Maxwell's last month, and thoroughly enjoyed the live performance - I just wish they hadn't opened with, in my opinion, their best song that night. Woodsist Records has also been responsible for releases by now-higher profile bands such as Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts and those nature kids Wavves. Yet, the impressive stable of good acts on the label extends even further...here are four more Woodsist bands you should check out now:

The Fresh & Onlys

Meneguar

Ganglians

The Mayfair Set

Them Crooked Vultures, you guys are good at naming rock songs...

I'm halfway through my first listen to the Them Crooked Vultures album, released today. It's not rocking my socks off yet. However, some of the song titles are priceless:

Caligulove

Mind Eraser, No Chaser

Interlude With Ludes

And there's something strangely appealing to 'Warsaw or The First Breath You Take After You Give' too.

Happy 32nd Birthday, Oksana Baiul...

Screenshot further proves the assertion: you can't front on that. Also, I love how I find out about stuff these days - H/T @BannedInJapan and @boweryballroom.

Happy Birthday, Oksana Baiul. 1994 Olympic gold medalist in ladies figure skating. The Ukraine is strong.

That little dude in the middle is none other than The Bawse Jr. - Rick Ross' son Lil William.

28 new(ish) bands for you to check out...

What's in the silver locket? What's in the silver frame? Who's that fool around your neck? Albatross, albatross, albatross.

Those are the only lyrics to the song 'Albatross, Albatross, Albatross' by Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. It devolves into some guitar wailing after each reprise. If you can't handle the psychedelia, walk away.

Here are some other rock n' roll groups to check out:

Random thought on bands' MySpace pages: I've found that I'm more likely to enjoy the groups who list their genre as concrete or jungle, but aren't jungle, and certainly aren't concrete (I don't even know if that's actually a genre of music).

Rock is dead...so is oil production

Interesting correlation of the early afternoon - the release of the tunes in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time to crude oil production in the lower 48.

Chart credited to Overthinking It. Found via GOOD, by way of Largehearted Boy.

Andy Warhol's Polaroids Of Sports Champions...

Would you go see this? The images look pretty cool online - not sure I'm compelled to go look at the actual 4 1/4 X 3 3/8 inch Polaroids, being displayed between now and Dec. 12 at the Danziger Project, in the meatpacking district on the west side of Manhattan.

Most of these photos were part of stage one in the process of ten paintings that Warhol did for art collector Richard Weissman in the late '70's called "Athletes Series." According to a press release from Danziger people, he later added a few more shots - like John McEnroe with Tatum O'neal.

See the full set - 24 total - at Danziger Project's website.

Happy 11/11...or the day that most resembles corduroy...

In a NY Times article, Jonathan Ames wrote of Miles Rohan, founder of the Corduroy Appreciation Club, "Had a nervous but nearly mischievous smile, which is how I would characterize him in general — a bit nervous with a taste for mischief of a certain kind. Like starting a club with corduroy as its spiritual center."

At the time of that piece in 2006, Rohan's club consisted of an impressive 832 members. In a video posted by Neatorama last week, Rohan boasts that they now retains 3,000 members worldwide. Question is, how many are planning to be at the Grand Meeting tonight? Kicking off shortly at the Montauk Club in Brooklyn, NY. Ames once served as the Keynote speaker at the event.

Visit Corduroyclub.com to learn more, as well as read some poems and see some artwork inspired by corduroy. Personally, I can only claim to have been in a band that was inspired by corduroy (the Pearl Jam song rather than the fabric).
